When a conservative voice gets gunned down on a college quad, theories line up, each promising the easy answer.

The obvious narratives have already been spooned into two neat bowls: the left did it, or the right. Both are comforting since conservatives can blame someone who was trans and claimed to be Antifa, and the left can say it was a right-wing gun nut who thought Kirk wasn’t far enough to the right.

Both also ignore the messy, inconvenient fact that no one seems to want to admit out loud: who had the most to gain?

The online mob is already spinning certainties out of odd coincidences; we must not. But neither should we look away from odd patterns and political incentives when a high-profile media figure is killed in the middle of a culture war.

Charlie Kirk was shot while speaking at Utah Valley University. His killing has sparked national outrage, including immediate condemnations from political leaders, and an intense online firestorm of speculation from both sides of the political spectrum.

Authorities seemed to quickly pursue leads and arrested a couple of persons of interest, later naming a suspect.

Global right-wing leaders, including Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu and President Donald Trump, publicly tweeted that they were going to be praying for him…at the exact same time.
