Every dystopia worth its salt doesn’t come crashing down all at once, it creeps in. A law here, a court decision there, some prayer slipped back into the school system, a new round of abortion bans, a little more surveillance in the name of “safety.”
Before you know it, we’re not debating how far we are from Margaret Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale, we’re arguing about whether we’ve already arrived. You don’t get to blame only Republicans for this one. Democrats and the capitalist system itself have been laying the groundwork for years, it was a team effort!
From 2020 to 2025 Republicans have been on a crusade to turn America into a half-theocratic, half-authoritarian playground. They call it “family values.” What they really mean is they want to ban all abortions, outlaw gender-affirming care, ban books they don’t like, gut civil rights, dismantle federal agencies, and expand presidential powers... Project 2025, their master plan, openly fantasizes about reshaping the government into a one-man show where the President essentially becomes a king, and a very angry, thin skinned, religious king at that.
But here’s where the so-called “resistance party” comes in.
Democrats love to campaign on protecting your rights. They’ll wear the pink hats, they’ll post the hashtags, pose with kente cloth, they’ll yell about how dangerous the GOP is.
But when it comes to actually codifying Roe v. Wade?
When it comes to protecting voting rights or stopping gerrymandering?
When it comes to rolling back the Patriot Act and the ever-expanding surveillance state?
Sure, they passed some infrastructure spending and threw us a bone with child tax credits, but none of that stops the slow-motion dismantling of democracy. If Republicans are stomping on the gas, Democrats are the ones riding shotgun, muttering “we tried” while staring at their fundraising numbers.
They’ve got so used to using the Republicans to boost their fund raising, they forgot that eventually they have to do something…
