As Americans, most of us are likely ignorant of Afghan history. If you’re one of the rare ones who is actually aware of the history there prior to the turn of the millennium, you still likely haven’t seen past the headlines about freedom and Soviet “invasion.” But if you do dig further, you’ll find something the textbooks and media never quite tell you: The U.S. didn’t just help fight the Soviets in Afghanistan. We helped destroy a progressive society, derail a secular future, and empower the very extremists who would later blow up our buildings (allegedly).

In the American narrative, we were backing “freedom fighters”, brave mujahideen resisting Soviet aggression.

Reagan even invited some of them to the White House and called them “the moral equivalent of our Founding Fathers.” The image was clear: men in turbans with AK-47s standing against communist tyranny.
