The next presidential debate had been set for September 10th by ABC News, and only about a week ago Fox News presented the option of having a debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump on September 17th.

To this proposition, Donald Trump stated:

“I haven’t agreed to anything. I agreed to a debate with Joe Biden,” Trump said. “But I want to debate her, and she’ll be no different, because they have the same policies. I think debating’s important for a presidential race, I really do, you sort of have an obligation to debate.”

Pretty confident words, although note that nothing was set in stone in his statement, not that it would matter if he had considering how often he has said and done contradictory things.

Now it appears as if he is trying to back away from this debate, likely at the recommendation of close advisors who can surmise that his prowess to debate a man who is obviously displaying symptoms of dementia may not translate into an ability to debate a woman who is 22 years younger and an incredibly sharp prosecutor.

Regarding Biden, he said

“anytime, anywhere, anyplace.”

During the Ingram interview, he changed his tune:

Trump: “So, I like debating. I like debating, I’ve done a lot of debates,”
“I want to do a debate, but I also can say this: Everybody knows who I am, and now people know who she is,” he said, accusing Harris of being a “radical left lunatic.”
Laura: “Then why not debate her?”
Trump: “Well, wait. But, because they already know everything.”
Laura: “They’re going to say you’re afraid of debating her,”
Trump: “They said that with Biden, too.” “I’m leading in the polls,” (The polls are very tight at this point, way closer than with Biden)
“The answer’s yes, I’ll probably end up debating,”
“I think actually the debate should take place before the votes start getting cast.”
“So the answer’s yes,” Trump said. “But I can also make a case for not doing it.”

After all of this, he made a comment that he thinks Kamala will be easier to defeat than Joe, stating that Joe has a base that she doesn’t have.

There could be some truth to that, seeing as how Biden was a popular VP under Obama, but this ignores the fact that many people will turn out to vote to make history by voting for the first woman, black woman, Indian, and Indian woman in U.S. history. (Yes, until Obama no boxes had been checked other than white male)

Not to mention all of the optimism that has filled those who were dreading voting for Biden again, knowing full well that he wasn’t mentally up to the job anymore.

You can watch the interview for yourself here:

While not attending the next debate may not shake the faith of his cult of MAGA supporters, they aren’t enough to win him the election and he knows it.

His campaign has said they won’t confirm him debating Kamala until after she has officially been nominated by the DNC, which in my opinion just sounds like they’re trying to figure out what drug cocktail of stimulants he needs to be on to stand a chance.
