I had never heard of this syndrome until recently, but it’s evidently something that happens when the body is breaking down, when the mind is unraveling into terror, and when death seems imminent.

This is a bizarre phenomenon where people in life-or-death situations report the sudden presence of an invisible companion who guides, comforts, or even physically helps them survive. We’re not talking about an imaginary friend or the last panicked hallucination before a blackout. These are often hyper-specific encounters, described with eerie consistency across different cultures, eras, and types of trauma.

The people reporting this aren’t hippies tripping on ayahuasca in the jungle. These are polar explorers, soldiers, deep-sea divers, mountaineers, and survivors of trauma so extreme that most of us couldn’t imagine living through it. Many of them are deeply rational, trained professionals. Yet still, they all describe that same sudden, mysterious visitor. A “presence” just behind their shoulder, a voice urging them forward, a guiding hand pulling them toward survival.
