Americans pretend Hawaii just kind of fell into our laps.

A tropical paradise that begged to join the United States, handed over by smiling hula dancers.

Hawaii wasn’t “acquired.” It was stolen, at gunpoint, by businessmen who wanted sugar profits and land, with the Dole family right at the center of it.

Sanford Dole wasn’t the guy running the pineapple fields, that was his cousin James Dole, who would show up after the monarchy had already been deposed.

Sanford was the lawyer-politician who helped rip out the Hawaiian monarchy by the roots and replace it with a government made for American corporate interests.
