America has always had a love-hate relationship with moral superiority. We love calling other countries “backwards”, especially when it comes to women’s rights and protecting children. We wag our fingers at countries in the Global South, decrying practices like child marriage as barbaric and primitive, and we proudly proclaim ourselves the beacon of progress. If you peel back the facade, you’ll find a disturbing truth we don’t like to talk about: child marriage is still legal in the United States.
