I recently saw a headline claiming that “The Planet Earth is over $300 trillion in debt.” Not a country, not a bank, not a corporation, the whole planet.

The Earth is apparently “in the red,” as if it somehow borrowed money from space lords and forgot to pay back the interest. The International Monetary Fund didn’t clarify whether the loan sharks are Martians or just old money families in Geneva, but either way, we’re supposed to take this seriously.

Let’s pause for a second and ask the obvious question: debt to who exactly? Who is the creditor in this scenario? The Galactic Federation? JPMorgan? God?

The last time I checked, debt is a human invention, so is money, so is compound interest, inflation, credit scores, and every other mechanism designed to make you feel like you’re failing at a game rigged by the people who wrote the rules. Now they want us to believe the entire planet is failing?
