If you’re like me and grew up in the U.S., you undoubtedly are more than likely to have a knee-jerk reaction when this topic is brought up, with negative mental imagery immediately flooding your mind. I was the same, having grown up in the U.S. in a Christian conservative family I didn’t even think kindly of Democrats until my later teens and basically have slid further left ever since.

“The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum. That gives people the sense that there’s free thinking going on, while all the time the presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by the limits put on the range of the debate.”- Noam Chomsky

Even after becoming a Democrat, the topics of socialism and communism still felt a bit taboo for years, and the terms were often used to smear ideas deemed “too far left,” like socialized medicine until Bernie Sanders brought it into being a more mainstream topic, he shifted the Overton Window far enough left for it to be allowed to be discussed.

Even then the U.S. still can’t get socialized medicine, Democrats won’t even bring it up anymore, and this isn’t by accident, too many of them are on the payroll of Big Pharma and the insurance industry. The country obviously has been sliding further and further right, and this isn’t just the fault of the Republicans.
