Tithing, that little 10% slice of your income churches say belongs to God (but somehow always ends up paying the light bill, the mortgage on a mega-church campus, and Pastor Steve’s third vacation this year). If you grew up in church, you probably heard “Give and it shall be given unto you,” or some guilt-laced variation involving Malachi 3:10. Maybe they promised you a financial blessing if you just gave “in faith.” But have you ever really thought critically about the origins of tithing?

No, it wasn’t invented by Joel Osteen, and it wasn’t originally about building laser light shows in worship centers. It started as a way to help people, real, struggling people, not to pay for LED screens and fog machines.
