Republicans are at it again, holding America’s poorest hostage for political gain. 40 million people, roughly 12% of the entire country, are about to face the prospect of losing their ability to buy groceries because a handful of well-fed politicians in Washington want to “balance the budget.”

Their new game plan, at least on the surface, is to block any effort to restore food assistance until Democrats agree to defund Obamacare, Medicaid, SNAP, and gut other social benefits all so they can give trillions more in tax cuts to the wealthy. It seems the only way to save the country is by ensuring people can’t eat or see a doctor. Yet, below the partisan theater and cable news talking points, a darker and more sinister use of hunger is at play. Leverage. History shows exactly how effective (and dangerous) this tactic can be.
