I grew up and spent much of my life in Texas…unfortunately. This state is known for having people who think it’s the “best state in the nation”, nay possibly the “best place on Earth”. Most of these people have never left their hometowns, let alone their home state, or country.
It’s easy to shit on Southerners, and Texans in particular since they are so loudly ignorant, but this is merely a symptom of a much bigger pathology in the U.S.
You see while Texans and Southerners are an echo chamber unto themselves, so are Americans in general.
Only 43% of Americans have a passport, and this is mostly amongst the younger generation. Yet in the 90s, only 5% of Americans had passports, so what changed? The key event that changed things was 9/11, numerous laws went into place that made it so Americans began needing a passport to fly to Mexico or Canada, which previously wasn’t required.
So this just means that other than going to Cancun or visiting Montreal, most Americans still aren’t exploring outside of North America, and when they do go past their southern border it’s just to resorts, with English-speaking staff and luxury found at a better price point.
