Palantir, the data-hungry, surveillance-obsessed lovechild of libertarian hypocrisy and post-9/11 paranoia. Its founder took the name from a magical object from Tolkien’s books, one most notably used by an evil wizard to spy on others, do with that info what you will.
It was co-founded in 2003 by billionaire Peter Thiel, a guy who thinks democracy and freedom are overrated, and has publicly said as much. Palantir was born out of a fantasy that the CIA could watch everyone, everywhere, all the time. Which they kind of can now, guess who helped them get there…
