Kids for Cash
When Profits Became More Important Than Children’s Lives

Let’s talk about the time when two judges literally sold kids to prison so they could make a quick buck. No, that’s not an exaggeration. It’s the real-life horror story called the “Kids for Cash” scandal, and it’s everything you need to know about what happens when capitalism infects the justice system.
Mark Ciavarella and Michael Conahan weren’t just corrupt judges in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, they were human traffickers. Between 2003 and 2008, they pocketed nearly $3 million in bribes from the people behind PA Child Care and Western PA Child Care, two private juvenile detention centers. In return? They shut down the local public detention center and fast-tracked kids into these for-profit jails like it was a damn conveyor belt.
What kind of “offenses” earned these kids a jail sentence? Petty theft, afight at school, making fun of their principal online. You know, typical teenage stuff, except now it came with a criminal record, psychological trauma, and in some cases, a literal death sentence.
Over 2,500 kids were sentenced by Ciavarella alone, it’s wasn’t just abuse of power, it was child abuse on a mass scale. Something he called “zero tolerance.”
