People from all over the world have traditionally done vision quests, albeit by different names and entailing slightly different details. We see this tradition all the way from the Native Americans of North America, the Aboriginals of Australia, the Ancient Greek “mysteries”, various African “initiation rites”, South and Central American Indigenous use of Ayahuasca rituals, to Tibetan Buddhist practices.

These traditions have existed in societies all around the globe likely since the dawn of mankind, and they essentially always consist of a person at a pivotal moment in their life, whether that be an adolescent going through puberty, a person entering adulthood, or a person who is going through a life-changing event seeking guidance. This person then goes through a process involving isolation, fasting, and at times hallucinogenic substances.

During these times the person often ends up encountering some type of spirit guide, and or facing internal conflicts, or tests, to make themselves look inward and figure out what their soul, God, or existence is telling them is the right path to take.
