It’s always fascinating watching American Christians cherry-pick scriptures, one of the most blatantly ignored teachings? Usury. For you who may not be completely sure what that is, it’s charging interest on loans, especially predatory ones, the kind that traps people in lifelong debt. The kind that Jesus explicitly condemned, and that modern banks, credit card companies, and yes, student loan servicers have built their empires on.

Yet, somehow, if you’re drowning in debt and you dare to say, “Hey, maybe I shouldn’t have to pay back $120,000 on a $30,000 loan for getting a degree society told me I needed,” suddenly you’re deemed lazy. You just want a handout, you’re entitled, you’re… anti-Christian, even though Jesus literally preached the opposite.
