Once again, Israel is lighting a match in a room full of gasoline, and the rest of us are expected to sit quietly while they play with fire. Just moments ago, Israel launched what it’s calling a “preemptive strike” against Iran and then, in a classic act of projection, warned that Iran might retaliate. U.S. airbases and embassies across the region are on high alert, Tel Aviv is bracing for missile fire, and the Pentagon is scrambling to contain the fallout, all because Netanyahu and his war cabinet couldn’t resist provoking another regional conflict under the banner of “self-defense.”

The United States had just announced new nuclear talks with Iran set to begin in Oman this weekend. The ink wasn’t even dry on the briefing papers before Israel dropped bombs and sabotaged any diplomatic window that might’ve remained open. Now, Defense Minister Israel Katz has declared a “state of emergency,” as if Israel weren’t the ones that kicked the door down in the first place.

But don’t worry, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the U.S. had “no involvement” in the Israeli strike. Right, just like we had “no involvement” in the last dozen times Israel dragged us into a regional disaster that ended with American troops coming home in body bags or stuck in endless deployments in the Middle East. Rubio insisted our “top priority is protecting American forces in the region.” That might sound comforting, if we didn’t all know damn well that the U.S. is effectively a bodyguard for Israel’s militaristic escapades, something we pay for in both dollars and lives.
