A while back I wrote an article about Judas after having a discussion with some Christians about whether or not they believed he was destined for Hell. They gave me an expected answer as is the case most of the time, that the Devil had corrupted him, and that he could’ve asked God for forgiveness but chose to end his own life rather than seek salvation.

This seems like a satisfactory answer if you haven’t read the story, which is the case with most Christians I’ve met. They listen to the pastor’s sermon and absorb his interpretation rather than cracking open that Biblical fashion accessory they carry around.

We see here that Judas was in fact possessed by Satan when he betrayed Jesus, and Jesus was fully aware before it occurred and during, but didn’t rebuke or cast Satan out of him. Instead, he told Satan to go about doing what he was going to do. Note that this verse doesn’t imply that Judas was influenced by Satan, but was actually fully possessed. In other cases of possession in the Bible the person seems to have no control over themselves in these situations, so we can assume Judas wasn’t exactly acting of his own volition.

This fact actually makes Judas’ subsequent actions make a lot more sense.

What truly evil man would feel this much regret especially immediately after the bad deed had been committed? Truly evil people hardly, if ever, feel any regret for what they do.

Most Christians would argue that Judas had backslidden in his faith in his cause, or had done something else to allow Satan to possess him. This ignores the fact that Jesus predicted the event and that it was a critical part of this plan that had been set in motion for Jesus to be crucified, another event he predicted and told his disciples about numerous times.
