What if the United States Became the American Union?

I’ve written before about America splintering into a handful of regional blocs, maybe half a dozen smaller nations, but let’s take this idea further.

Let’s imagine the United States didn’t fracture into regions, possibly violently, but rather fully dissolved into 50 sovereign nations, loosely tied together in something like the European Union.

It may initially sound insane, but there’s a case to be made that this might actually work better than the current dysfunctional imperial sprawl we call the “United States.”
