When Trump threatened to gut USAID and foreign assistance programs, the media rushed to center stage, playing the usual symphony: “chaos,” “disaster,” “abandoning allies,” “global instability.” But what if, just hear me out, the end of U.S. foreign aid was actually the beginning of something better for these countries?

It sounds like blasphemy, I know. After all, “aid” sounds good. “Assistance” sounds compassionate. It’s about empire, but with paperwork and buzzwords like “democracy,” “development,” and “civil society.”
