Christians that I’ve known in my life have always had an excessive focus on sex. Whether that be their focus against homosexuality which we see even more now in the U.S., or sexual “purity” before marriage which does a lot of psychological damage to young people, especially girls and women. In some cases, it even causes physical harm to those that engage in risky sex due to never having learned about safe sex and eventually giving into their primal drives.

On top of all of this, Christians also discourage and shame the act of masturbation and viewing of pornography, while emphasizing that celibacy is the only acceptable route in their eyes, even though this leaves a key physiological need of Maslow’s hierarchy unfulfilled.

Then there are gay kids and adults who are in a constant state of conflict within themselves due to their religious programming and their own sexual drives that contradict what they’ve been taught.

If we need to find more examples of the damage this teaching causes let’s look to the Catholic Church and the numerous sexual scandals they’ve had related to priests preying on children or nuns, or the Southern Baptists in the U.S. and their numerous sexual scandals.

It would seem that when someone is so sexually and mentally twisted up by these doctrines they’re more likely to act on those impulses in perverse ways. However this could just be an example of correlation and not causation. Perhaps sexual deviants are just drawn to the church?
