You’ve got to hand it to the Democratic Party. No, really — if there were an Olympic medal for political gaslighting, they’d be neck-and-neck with the Republicans in the finals every single year. But while the GOP tends to be loud, proud, and openly malicious, Democrats have built their brand around a much more insidious kind of manipulation. They’re the party of “we hear you,” “we see you,” and “we’ll absolutely do nothing about it, but thank you for your input, and your donations!”

And nothing captures this dynamic better than the role of Bernie Sanders and his ilk, AOC, the Squad, Nina Turner, and the cast of left-ish hopefuls who campaign as revolutionaries but always, always tell you to vote blue when the dust settles. Because that’s the job. Keep hope alive just long enough to stop a real revolt.
