The White House press secretary recently called the Democratic Party “a bunch of terrorists.” An interesting label, she could’ve gone with “divided,” or “weak on messaging,” or impotent…but nah, she chose terrorists. This term used to be reserved almost exclusively for people of Middle Eastern descent. Honestly, this shouldn’t be shocking; this didn’t come out of nowhere after all. It’s the natural next step in a country that’s been calling its own citizens enemies of the state for decades.

You see, this rhetoric didn’t start with pro-Palestine protests. It’s just the latest mutation of the same old idea that anyone who questions the empire, at home or abroad, must be a terrorist sympathizer. Oppose genocide? Pro-Hamas. Criticize police brutality? Antifa terrorist. Demand healthcare? Communist threat.

The only “safe” political opinion left is obedience.

All of this has deep, festering roots, going back even before 9/11 ever became the national trauma to justify endless wars and surveillance.
